Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting and normally focuses on the abdominal area along with any given 'Emergency' field they may be required to serve upon.
The video to the right is of an emergency open thoracotomy. It is graphic.
Trauma surgeons deal with acute emergencies such a perforated bowel (Gastrointestinal perforation). This occurs when the contents of the intestines to leak out into the abdominal cavity. This puts the patient at an extreme risk of infection which would eventually lead to septic shock, which is the body's severe response to bacteria and other germs. Perforated bowels must be treated as soon as they are found or they will other wise lead to death. This is a prime example that trauma surgeons do not just deal with gunshot and stab wounds but are very versatile and knowledgeable of the human anatomy.
