Trail of Tears: Cherokee
The Cherokee are original residents of the American Southeast Region
Cherokee menwere in charge of hunting, war, and diplomacy. Cherokee women were in charge of farming, property and family.
There are three federaly recongized Cherokee tribes: the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, the United Keetoowah Band in Oklahoma, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina.
Cherokee houses were made of river cane and plaster, with thatched roofs. Cherokee men wore breechclotes and leggings. Cherokee women wore wraparound skirts and poncho kind of blouse. Cherokee wore moccasins. They also grew corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers.
Challenges along the Trail:-There were diseases.-Malnutrition-Exposure-A shortage of wagons, horses, food, and other supplies that made the marches difficult.
President Andrew Jackson ignored the supreme court ruling that didnt want the Cherokee to move, but the supreme court wanted all the Cherokee gone.
There was a harsh winter. The snow was hard on the ground and huge masses of ice drifted on the river. There were sick babies and and older men on the point of death. :(
