Kelsey Paine of Billboard called the song "a love letter to DJs everywhere, with hand claps that build to a crescendo of pure, infectious dance-pop."

Giving it four stars out of five, Jessica Phillips wrote in Country Weekly magazine that the group "certainly need have no fear of a sophomore slump" due to the success of "Need You Now". She also said that the album showed the trio's "ability to craft memorable country pop hooks," but added that "not every song works on this record."

By the end of December 2010, it had sold 4,310,000 digital copies, becoming the second biggest selling digital song of that year.

James Montgomery of MTV News said, that the song is a "big, bright, decidedly beach-friendly pop tune, full of sunshiny synthesizers, starry, electronic whooshes, and loose, funky, wah-wah guitar flourishes"

Monica Herrera of Billboard magazine said the song, like "Yeah!," appealed to a broader audience and attuned to clubs. Herrera also said that "the lyrics are hypnotic hand claps and soccer-game chants that fade in and out to keep the party going".

Airplanes" had sold over 4 million digital downloads by December 2010, according to Nielsen Soundscan, becoming a bigger success in the United States than his debut single, "Nothin' On You"

Michael Menachem from Billboard stated, "Rihanna's chorus is exquisitely melodic and surprisingly hopeful, complementing the turmoil of Eminem's dark, introspective rant.

Kitty Empire of The Guardian wrote that singles like "Bad Romance" make Gaga more comparable with Madonna

Nick Levine from Digital Spy rated the song 4 out of 5 stars, gaving a positive review, naming it "a suitably Eurohousey club pumper it's essentially a cheap, tasty and entirely satisfying banger".

Although BBC Music called the song a "cheese-fest", the reviewer said "in a weird way it's kind of beautiful", investing in the "Ibiza-inspired R&B trend".
