On January 6, 1994, Harding's main competitor Nancy Kerrigan was attacked. The attack took place after a practice in Detroit. Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt, were behind the attack. Her leg was only bruised, not broken, but the injury forced her to withdraw from the national championship leaving Harding with winning that event. After recovering, both Harding and kerrigan were selected for the 1994 Olympics. Harding finished eights while Kerrigan won the silver medal.
Harding was born in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of LaVona Fay Golden and Al Hardimg. She began skating at age three. Harding began her competitive skating career in the mid-1980s, her best being placed third in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Also winning Skate America 198. Harding's breakthrough year was in 1991, where she landed her first triple axel at the U.S. Championships.
The word spiteful means, the intention to do something evil. I chose this word because in this situation, what Tonya Harding did to Nancy Kerrigan was a very spiteful thing for someone to do
