Scout
Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout. He proves to be the moral compass of the story. Atticus is faced with the challege of representing Tom Robinson, a black man, in trial. He teaches the children to walk in someone else's shoes before judging them.

Scout is the protagonist in the story. She is the daughter of Atticus and the sister of Jem. Scout is an inquisitive little girl who loves to learn. She learns many important lessons throughout the novel.
Jem is Scout's older brother. He watches over and protects her. Jem is a typical All-American boy who loves football and adventure. He matures and begins to see things in a different light towards the end of the novel.
Calpurnia, or Cal, is the family's cook. Though she isn't a blood relative, she is very much part of the family. Cal disciplines the children and shows them a view of Maycomb that is different than what they are accustomed to.
Plot To Kill a Mockingbird follows the childhood of Scout and Jem, as they grow up in a sleepy Alabama town. They learn many lessons from their widowed father, Atticus as he faces racial issues in a town with deep-set social inequality.
