Tip 4

Teach sight words(high frequency words that don't follow general spelling patterns)

Tip #4

Word Study

Instead of teaching students how to spell specific words, word study teaches general patterns that can be applied to spell many different words. Blends and digraphs are examples of these patterns. There are some words that need to be explicitly taught because they do not follow the general patterns. These words can be taught as sight words and are memorized by the students.

Teach Word Knowledge, Not Just Words

"The instruction is unique in that it focuses students’ attention on consistencies within our spelling system."
