Brief Timeline of U.S. History

This timeline shows major events between the time the Pilgrims landed and the end of World War II. On the bottom time line, we see when some important inventions were made.

Time Line

1620

The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, but it took the colonists until 1783 to defeat the British during the American Revoluton.

More Americans died in the Civil War (1861 - 1865) than in all other wars combined. The North (Union) defeated the South (Confederacy) and kept the country united.

World War II began in 1939, but America did not enter it until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The war ended in 1945 with the Allies (America, England, Russia) defeating the Axis (Germany, Japan, Italy).

Called the Great War, many nations fought in what we now call World War I, between 1914 and 1918.

The Mayflower, a ship from England, arrives with settlers at Plymouth Rock. They wanted religious freedom and also economic opportunity.
