Tiger

Range and HabitatHistorically, tigers were widespread across Asia, from Turkey eastward. They have been extirpated from most of their former range, and remaining populations are highly fragmented within southeast Asia. Those remaining are quickly becoming extinct due to the hunger for tiger parts in Asia as well as habitat loss. There are about 400 Siberian tigers left in Russia and northern China. There are 500 tigers in Malaysia, 500 in Myanmar, less than 50 in southern China, 500 in Sumatra, less than 200 in Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Bhutan and Bangledesh, and between 2,000-3,000 in India and Nepal. They tend to inhabit areas close to water with adequate cover. Habitats vary, and can include savannas, mangrove, temperate, coniferous and tropical rainforests.

ClassificationDomain Eukarya: This is the largest level of organization and includes the kingdoms of Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. This domain is identified by Eukaryotic cells or ones that contain a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles. Kingdom: Animalia:The kingdom Animalia is characterized by eukaryotic multicellular organisms. Their mode of nutrition is hetrotrophic and lack rigid cell walls in their cells. Most animals have a fixed development and are motile. Phylum: Chordata: Chordates are organisms that have a spinal chord. Other characteristics include bilateral symmetry, segmented bodies, ventral heart, and complete digestive system. Examples include humans, birds, fish, and amphibians. Class: Mamalia: All mammals share at least three characteristic not found in other animals: middle ear bones, hair, and production of milk by mammary glands. This class includes species as divers as bats, humans, and whales. Order: Carnivora: This diverse order derives its name from a Latain term that means flesh devour or meat eater. Meat eater does describe many of the order, but not all. Carnivorans are primarily land animals with strong claws, four or more toes per foot, and canine teeth. Includes lions, tigers and bears oh my!Family: Felidea: Felidea is the biological family of cats. Felids are carnivorous animals subsisting almost entirely on other vertebrates. This includes all cats from tigers to domestic house cats. Genus : panthera: Panthera is the genus of “big cats”. It includes four main species: the tiger, the lion, the jaguar, and the leopard. Species: tigris: The largest of cats, tigers range in color from pale yellow to reddish ochre (brownish yellow). Each tiger has a black stripe pattern that is uniquely its own.

Tiger BehaviorAlthough reputed to be fiercely solitary, the tiger simply needs a lot of space to hunt and therefore is social at a distance. In fact, a male’s territory usually overlaps those of several females. The tiger visits most of its territory within the space of a few days and marks it boundaries by shredding the bark of trees with its claws. Then it sprays these signposts with strong smelling urine.

The BHS Tigers have been known to be the most vicious of all tigers

Tigers are solitary hunters. They love the water, and are not afraid to chase their prey down into the water. In fact, this is how tigers often get food. The wait for an animal to be drinking at a water hole, then scares the animal into the water, where the tiger will chase it farther into deeper waters, making it easier to catch. Tigers have retractable claws. This enables them to walk through rocky, grassy, muddy, or sandy areas without dulling their claws, which they need to hunt with.
