Three Billy Goats Gruff & the Troll

From the Cool School

This story is about three billy goats, Billy Sr., Billy Jr., and Billy III. They were three generations of billy goats, all with the last name Gruff. They loved to eat grass! They loved to eat grass so much that they ate all the grass in their small area. This was a problem. Across the way, they saw green grass flowing. They knew they had to get over there! There was just one problem. There was a very long bridge preventing them from getting to the other side. The bridge was so wobbly and so high, the goats were scared. But the goats were so hungry, they knew they had to go over the bridge. The billy goats decided that Billy III should cross first, becuase he was the smallest and they needed to make sure it was safe to cross the bridge. He made it halfway across before he came across a troll! This troll loved to eat goats, especially goats named Billy. The troll wanted to eat Billy III, but Billy III told him he was too small, and that he needed to go eat some more grass and get bigger before the troll should eat him. So, the troll let him over. Billy III wanted to let his dad and grandpa know he made it over, and also warn them of the troll, so he wrote them a letter warning them of the troll. But, Billy III didn't know how to spell troll, so he drew a picture. When the other two billy goats got the letter, they didn't know what the picture was supposed to be. It was time for Billy Jr. to cross. He set off across the bridge and got about half way across when he ran into the troll! The troll knew he was a goat named Billy, so he wanted to eat him! But, Billy Jr. told the troll that he should let him eat some grass on the other side before he eats him, so he is tastier. So, the troll lets him over the bridge and he reunites with Billy III. Billy Jr. writes a letter to his dad to warn him of the troll. When Billy Sr. starts to go over the bridge, he runs into the troll as well. But, Billy Sr. was way too big for the troll to eat! Billy Sr. is so big, he is able to knock the troll all the way into outer space! Billy Sr. made it to the other side with the other two goats, and they ate endless amounts of grass!

Category of Learning - Comprehension Strategy: Questioning

Acitivity: Students will write four questions from the video story on three pieces of paper. These questions should be a who, what, when, where, or why question. After students have written their question, they will put their questions in a jar. The teacher will walk around, and each student should pick four questions out of the jar. They will glue the end of the piece of paper on a piece of construction paper to make a flap foldable. They will write the answer to the question they picked under the flap. After they have answered the questions, students will read their questions and answers to the other students in their group, and they will ensure that they have answered them correctly. Students will turn there papers with answered questions into me after checking with their group members.
