Thomas Edison is famous for inventing the telegraph, phonograph, electric light bulb, alkaline storage batteries, an improved telephone transmitter, and Kinetograph. Edison's first financial succes was the quadruplex telegraph. This was a significant invention because it allowed telegraph compnies to send out more messages over fewer wires. In 1876, he built a research facility where he developed the light bulb, the phonograph, and the improved telephone transmitter. In 1887, he opened a new facility in West Orange where he developed the motion picture camera (kinetograph) and a machine for watching movies (kinetoscope). Edison also created a movie studio before dying in 1931.
