Thirteen Reasons Why

Summary

The main character is this boy named Clay. He is sent set of tapes that were annoymously sent to him. They contain the voice of a girl, Hannah, who had previously killed herself 2 weeks prior. These tapes are sent to 13 different people, each she blames for her death in some way or another. Each side of the tape has a story of what that person had done to her. If the tapes are not sent to the next person on the list, they are threatened that there is another set of tapes that will be exposed to the public. There is also a map placed in the box that the tapes were mailed in. This map is said to be followed and each place that a certain story had occured was marked on the map indicating they should visit that place. When Clay receives these tapes he is devastated because he has had a crush on Hannah ever since she moved to his school. Clay begins to listen to the tapes. He hears all of the terrible stories, and rumors that were made up about her and how untrue they were and the true story behind every one of them. On the fifth tape Clay comes to his story, where Hannah assures him that he had done nothing wrong and that she really liked him. Clay finds his friend Tony waiting for him in the parking lot. Tony reveals to Clay that he is the one with the second set of tapes and was instructed to follow everyone who received the tapes to make sure they sent them out. Clay finishes the tapes and send them off to the next on the list.

This book has more of an internal conflict. Clay has an internal conflict throughout the story because he had a crush on Hannah from the beginning, but because of her bad reputation due to rumors he never really gave her a chance, and even though she does not blame him in any way for her death, he blames himself because if he would have been with her he might've been able to stop her.

Conflict

Theme

“No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same."

The theme is that everything you do in life has an effect on something in one way or another. You must take responsibility for your actions, and never to take anything for granted because before you know it it could be too late. Hannah waited for someone to help her and no one did, everyones actions built up ad destroyed her.

“I hope you're ready, because I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why.”

Quote

“You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything. . .affects everything.”
