Clay Jenson receives a package at his door. When he opens it, he is surprised to find cassette tapes inside. Clay is much more surprised when he listens to the first one and discovers the voice of a dead classmate. Two weeks ago, Hannah Baker, committed suicide, and Clay thought that was the end of her... Until now. He finds out what the tapes are for and he wants to find out why he is on them.

He learns many dark and painful secrets about Hannah as he wanders around town, listening to the tapes and waiting for his name to appear. Clay's perspective on Hannah and the other 12 people, including himself will change after he finds out what they all did to her.

The new girl in school who had a reputation based on lies. False rumors were spread and she couldn't take it anymore, so she committed suicide. Before doing so, Hannah left tapes behind for the people who were the cause of her death.

A minor character in the novel, who made quite an impact on Hannah's life. He was Hannah's first kiss and first love. Justin was the cold hearted jerk who started one of the many false rumors about Hanna.

The girl who only really cared about what people thought about her and her reputation. Courtney helped Hannah, but she also used her to her own advantage. She pretended to be someone who she really wasn't.

The narrator of the novel. He was in love with Hannah, but he never got the chance to tell her. He always saw past the false rumors about her and saw the good in Hannah. He spends an entire day listening to the tapes, wanting to find out what he did.
