The United States of America: A State-By-State Guide

Connection to History:

Connection to Geography:

This book mentions historical events that happened in each state, from the first American kindergarten class being held in Winsconsin to the ever-famous Battle of the Alamo in Texas.

This book states many interesting facts about each of the 50 states (plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico). It mentions everything from state symbols (ex. state tree or state animal) to year of statehood to even historical trivia!

This book has maps of every state (as well as Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico). These maps have rivers, lakes, mountains, and other landforms marked, as well as border states.

Connection to Life:

Strengths of this Book:

Weaknesses of this Book:

*There are several facts that children will find interesting*The book is very colorful and will hold a child's attention*There are very well-done maps

*The book was written in 1999, so the population numbers are outdated.*The only U.S. territory mentioned is Puerto Rico.

This book can be used to introduce the concept of an atlas to children. It can also prompt projects that involve researching states.
