[2015] Melissa Singh: The Turning by Gillian Chan

Making Connections This reading strategy is a great way to better understand the book. Making connections helped me to understand the book because I was able to make text-to-text,text-to-world, and text-to-self connections to understand the book in multiple ways. For example I made a text-to-self connection to the main character Ben, when he was not greatful for his family. This connection helped me to understand that we should be greatful for things in our lives, such as parents, because one day they might not be their for us.

The Turning

Ben moves to England with his father after the passing of his mother. He does not want to live with his dad because he feels as if his father does not care about him. As for Ben not getting along with his father, he is followed around by the strange girl in school, Yvonne lea. This is the start of a problem that ben can barely comprehend. He gets lured into the wood by a strange force to find that he has an ancient gift and must help the Green man,Wyliff, restore the balance bewtween our worlds.

How to use flagingFlaging is putting sticky notes on pages that have content that need to be reviewed when reading the book.1. Firslty, when reading have some sticky notes out.2. Secondly, as continuing to read put a sticky note on the important pages. 3. Then, after each reading session go back and reread the flagged pages (this will help to remember key information).4. As an end result, the readers can go back to the flagged pages to review important information that can be used for future assignments.

"We preserve what is left. It will Suffice." (Chan 118)

"Part of the pain was knowing that when she died, you'd come back into my life." (Chan 20)

"He had never been so close to a human house before, although distance was becoming more difficult as the woodlands were eaten away by building." (Chan 40)
