The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

The main character of the thrilling novel, The Testing, is Cia Vale. Cia, the youngest of two brothers, is the only daughter of one of the most recognized scientists in her home colony, Five Lakes. While she shows an aptitude for chemistry and mechanics, Cia hopes to follow in her father's footsteps and study at The University, a prestigious school in Tosu City, the capital of the United Commonwealth. The teenage protagonist is cunning, loyal, and has an obvious understanding of morality.

Cia Vale

The Testing is set in a futuristic dystopian society, one like The Hunger Games. Eighteen colonies of various sizes surround an enormous capital, known as Tosu City, in the novel. The setting of where the main character, Cia, lives is one of the outer colonies, mainly used for creating lush vegetation for the barren wasteland that is the United Commonwealth.

Cia Vale is chosen as a candidate for the Testing, a test only available for those who qualify. Warned to beware of her surroundings, Cia and the other candidates are sent to Tosu City, the capital, to participate in the Testing. Cia comes with friends from her colony, such as childhood friend and love interest Tomas Endress. In Tosu City, Cia goes through several tests including sorting out poisonous and non-poisonous plants, a group test relying on trust, and exams focusing on a single subject at a time. After the intelligence exams then comes one final test. The candidates are turned out into a huge plot of land with three chosen supplies and have the task of finding their way to the finish line. Along the way Cia teams up with Tomas, and encounters a mysterious man, who throws a brown paper bag of supplies necessary for Cia to survive every day. Cia and Tomas encounter other candidates trying to kill them, mutations, and traps set up by the Testing officials themselves. Eventually Cia and Tomas make it to the finish line, barely alive. Both find out they have passed the Testing, but are immediately given injections to erase all memories from the test. Life then continues as if the previous hardships never happened, until Cia finds a recording she made before all memories were erased. The recording contained every important event that occured.

Summary of Main Events

While the novel is filled to the brim with climactic events, the true climax is at the very end. By then Cia has gone through every phase of the Testing and awaits the letter telling her whether or not she has passed and been admitted into the Univeristy. They seat her in a quiet room and hand her an envelope, and when she opens it it reveals that she has passed, but someone comes up behind her and injects her in her neck with a mysterious medicine, which forces her to become completely unconcious.

My Opinion

I thought that The Testing was a fabulous novel and really worth the read. It was designed more like books such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Legend. Each chapter ended with something unexpected and leave you wanting to continue to find out what happens. I would absolutely recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read a futuristic dystopian kind of book.
