The Terracotta Army is the thousands of clay soldiers that were created ,between 221-207 B.C.E., during the reign of Qin Shihuangdi. The Terracotta army contained 7,000 figures of soldiers, horses, and chariots. The figures are actual life-sized and every face of figures are different.

Importance of the Terracotta Army

The Terracotta Army is significant archeological excavations that helped to understand Chinese history more in depth. The Terracotta Army built for preparation for China's first emperor's, Qin Shihuangdi, death. As an emperor of Qin dynasty, he wanted great artifacts that could revealed his power and the Terracotta Army were created for his after-life. Therefore, it was massive project that took 39 years, 246-208 B.C.E., to complete that required thousands of workers. This massive artifact was used to reveal Chinese peoples' religious belief of afterlife. The similar religious belief with Egypt shown by the Terracotta Army. They believed there are afterlife exist after one's death, which is similar to Egyptian's belief of afterlife. As Egyptian built pyramid, Chinese made the Terracotta Army to guard their emperor after his death. The Terracotta Army is the significant evidence to modern scholars also. Each of the figures or soldiers of the Terracotta Army have different face and have different uniform by their ranks. The Terracotta Army told modern scholar about China. The clothes, hairstyles, gear, and weaponry. Those gave modern scholar, insight into the Qin emperor mind and his philosophies that took place during China's history. These details of figures allow scholars and scientists to study the costumes, armaments, and technology during that time period.

Qin Shihuangdi ordered to construct the army for his after death and as a result, the Terracotta Army were created.

The figures were made using molds for different pieces, which were then assembled. Although the statues were originally brightly painted, the paint has since mostly flaked away.

The chamber containing the Terra Cotta Army was discovered in 1974 by a group of farmers attempting to dig a well near the ancient capital city of Chang’an in what is today the Shaanxi Province, near the modern city of Xi’an.
