THE TELESCOPE

1

WHO CREATED THE TELESCOPE?

Created in approximately 1608 by Hans Lipperhey. However, Galileo Galilei was the first to perform scientific studies with the instrument.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

2

Telescopes are used to observe the universe or visible (and non-visible) light from space. Distant stars and galaxies that would have otherwise remained undiscovered could now be analyzed and studied thanks to telescopes.

3

HOW DOES IT WORK?

There are many types of telescopes available today. However, the most common economy class telescopes (ones that you would see in your neighbours’ backyard) would be reflecting and refracting telescopes.

REFRACTOR

Light from the celestial body (incident rays) goes into the glass biconvex/converging lens that refracts the light into the focal point. The eyepiece then brings and magnifies the image to the pupil of your eye.

REFLECTOR

The incident rays first hit a primary concave mirror where they are then converged towards a secondary plane mirror. The light from the plane mirror is then reflected and aimed towards the eyepiece where the image forms, and is focused and magnified.

Pros: Advanced tecnology allows for telecopes to reveal rays that are not within the visible spectrum such as gamma ray, radio, and x-ray telescopes to produce more clear, never before seen images.

Cons: Such high levels of magnification lacks everyday usage. (compared to binoculars with its lower anoumnt of magnification and can be used in during ones day to day activities) In addition, compared to other optical devices and tecnologies (such as contact lenses or laser eye sugery), telescopes appear to be somewhat of a luxury in comparison to those devices that improve the lives of others.
