The Spartans

The marched without shoes and went without food. Life in ancient Greece was quite different for men and women. Whilst men were expected to take an active part in the public life of their city, women were expected to lead a private life as wives and mothers.

They had strict educaation. Women received an education and physical training.When they reached the age of eleven, Spartan boys were moved up to the next level of their education.

Their everyday life

When a male Spartan was at the age of seven, he was taken from his mother and sent to live in special military barracks for twenty three years. Boys were encouraged to fight each other but not in anger. Boys were not well fed and punished if caught stealing food.

The Spartans were sticklers for obedience to the law as the guide to proper behavior on matters large and small. The ancient Spartans believed in religion and the gods like the majority of the ancient Greek states.

The Spartans were one of, if the only Greek city-state that did not bury their dead apart from the living. Fallen Spartan soldiers were sometimes buried on the battlefield, due to the difficulty of transporting them home.
