The Spanish Armada

~The Spanish Armada~

During the 16th century, a pirate named Sir Francis Drake and his crew became a mariners under Queen Elizabeth 1. They called themselves the Sea Dogs.

Drake led 30 ships to Spain's Cadiz Harbor where they layed anchor. The Sea Dogs destoryed tons of supplies, delaying the invasion by a year.

In 1588, the Spanish Armada, 130 ships and 30,000 men, sailed to the English Channel. Francis Drake used fireships to destroy the Spanish formation and sank many of them to the bottom making victory for the English.

Fun History Fact: The victory was even remembered on Christmas when Elizabeth ordered that everybody should have goose on Christmas Day, for that was the meal she was eating on the evening that she heard her navy had beaten the Spanish Armada.
