The Secret Life of Bees

Set in South Carolina in 1964, This tale is about Lily Owens, a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father T-Ray, Lily leaves off with Rosaleen, (her caregiver and friend), to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past. They then stay with the Boatwright sisters, which later lily finds out that August boatwright was close to lilys mother.Lily finds happiness in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping, and uncovers the truth behind her mothers death.

In the beggining of the novel the setting was at lily owens house(t-rays house), but then took place at augusts house which eventually becomes the main setting.

“Most people don’t have any idea about all the complicated life going on inside a hive. Bees have a secret life we don’t know anything about” (148). Throughout the novel, the reader learns that characters are not what they seem on the surface. People’s lives are usually much more complicated than they appear. I believe that the theme of this book is that people arent always what they seem on the outside.
