The Road To Revolution

The French and Indian War The war began in the 1670s and ended in 1676 leaving about 600 colonists and 3,000 Indians, dead. England won and gained control of most of North America. In 1763, King George III issued the Proclamation of 1763 to avoid more conflict between the Indians and the colonists.

The Great AwakeningThe Great Awakening- a religious movement that swept through the colonies in the 1730s and 1740s- changed colonial religion. It drew people of different regions, classes, and races. People demanded more political equality due to The Great Awakening.

Boston Tea PartyThree ships from the British East India Company loaded with tea arrived in the Boston Harbor in 1773. In December of 1773, 3 colonists disguised as Indians got aboard the ships and dumped out 340 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. This event became known as the Boston Tea Party.

Intolerable ActsThe Parliament decided to punish Boston. Colonists called the laws the Intolerable Acts. These acts had many affects. The Boston Harbor was closed down until Boston paied for the tea and royal officials that were accused were sent to Britian for trial.

The Boston Massacre The Boston Massacre caused colonial resentment toward Great Britian. A British soldier struck at a colonist and fired into a crowd that had came in. Colonists called the shootings the Boston Massacre. The trials calmed people down but angered the British.

Declaratory Act Members of the Parliament were upset that colonists had challenged their authority. They soon issued The Declaratory Act and it stated that Parliament had the power to make laws for the colonies. The act took away much of their independance.

The EnlightenmentThe elightenment took place during the 1700s. It spread the idea that reason and logic could improve society. Enlightenment thinkers also came up with the idea on how government should work.

Tea ActThe British East India Compny had huge amounts of tea but couldn't sell it directly to colonists. The company offered the Parliament a solution. The Parliament agreed and passed the Tea Act which allowed the Compony to sell tea directly to colonists.

Great Britian had ousted the other European countries from North America. The British were in control. North America was added to the British Empire.
