The Punic Wars
BattlesThe First Punic War began in 264 BC with a conflict between Rome and Carthage. In 241 BC Carthage was finally tired of having wars and sued for peace. Rome made Carthage pay for damages after the war so Carthage had very little left to pay the mercenaries. The Second Punic War began in 218 BC when Hannibal left Spain with an army to attack Rome. In 201 BC Carthage surrendered. The Third Punic War lasted from 149-146 BC and was a seige of the city of Carthage. Carthaginain civilization came to and end when Rome took the city.
-Punic war gets its name from the Latin word called Punici as the ancient Phoenicians were responsible for founding Carthage.-Rome and Carthage were two of the biggest empires that were exapnding.-Carthage was the only power in the region that could match that of the Romans.-Wars lasted for about 25 years-Battle of Hannibal marched 40,000 troops and 40 elephants took over the alps into the Roman homeland

By 265 BC Carthage was the wealthiest and most advanced city in the region as well its naval power. Romes relation with Carthage had been historically friendly. Rome ended up having to rebuild its entire fleet in order to confront Carthage’s powerful navy. Rome also developed new sea war faring techniques that allowed them to use their land fighting skills in sea battles.
