The parable of the prodigal son teaches us that the Kingdom of God is merciful, compassionate, and fully sustaining. In the story, the father has pity on his son and shows compassion, and similarly, God is compassionate towards us. The father shows mercy to his son concerning the mistakes he made when he returns home. Likewise, God is merciful to us and forgives our sins. Lastly, the Kingdom of God fully sustains us and is the way to happiness. The son takes his money and leaves home in the pursuit of happiness, but realizes that he is happier at home, like how we are happier in God’s presence.

The Prodigal Son

Although The Prodigal Son parable touches on all four qualities of the Kingdom of God, it mostly shows that the Kingdom of God is a living reality. It shows this quality because the father of the prodigal son is human like all of us and even though the son took advantage of him , he welcomes the son home with open arms. The father loves his son and forgives him regardless of his past mistakes. The loving father symbolizes all people who show kindness and bring the Kingdom of God to earth. We should all strive to be as accepting and forgiving as this father so we too can create the Kingdom of God.

Luke 15: 11-32
