Milestones:By age 5...1. Can hop, maybe skip 2. Uses the potty3. Climbs and swings4. Stands on one foot for 10 seconds5. Uses a fork & spoon (Shelov & Altman, 2009).Facts:1. At 2, child is 1/2 height of adult size2. At 5, the brain weighs 90% of its adult brain weight 3. Heightened senses as brain develops4. Injuries & accidents are the greatest risk at this age5. Growth is slower than in infancy, requiring less intake of food(Feldman, 2012).

Milestones:By age five...1. Counts 10 or more things2. Can print some letters or numbers3. Can draw a person with at least 6 body parts4. Can use future tense when speaking5. Speaks clearly with full sentences(Shelov & Atlman, 2009).Facts:1. From 2-3, syntax doubles each month 2. By 4, children living in poverty experience 13 million fewer words3. The average preschooler watches 21 hours of tv per week4. Intuitive thinking develops5. Egocentric thinking predominates(Feldman, 2012).

Milestones:By age 5...1. Can tell what is real & make-believe2. Is aware of gender3. Shows more independence4. Wants to please & be like friends5. More likely to agree with rules(Shelov & Altman, 2009).Facts:1. Children this age are typically optimistic about their abilities2. By 4, children begin to identify themselves within a race or ethnicity3. Play is essential 4. Pass through stages of play with the final being cooperative play5. At 2, children begin to understand & regulate feelings (Feldman, 2012).
