In the Beginning...The Pirates were first known as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies and played their debut game on April 30, 1887 against the Chicago White Stockings. Four years later, the Alleghenies were renamed the Pittsburgh Pirates--a nod to their infamous "stealing" of second baseman Louis Bierbauer form the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1900, the club was sold to Barney Dreyfuss, who would draft a team including Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke. His "dream team" would go on to win the First World Series in 1903 against the Boston Americans.

Raise the What???The Jolly Roger???The expression "Raise the Jolly Roger" was coined by Greg Brown, an announcer for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mr. Brown was looking for a catch phrase to end the broadcast after a Pirates victory. Bob Walk, another Pirates broadcaster, suggested something to do with Pirates, perhaps "Hoist the skull and crossbones". Greg Brown fine tuned it and Raise the Jolly Roger is a phrase that all Pirates fans look forward to hearing!
