The Phoenicians

The Phoenicians were people who lived in the area of Palestine. After the deterioration of the Hittites and the Egyptians the Phoenicians gained political independance which led them to expand in trade. They gathered goods such as purple dye, glass, and lumber. They also built ships which helped them become sea traders, they charted routes not only in the Mediterranean but also in the Atlantic Ocean. Carthage is their most famous colony in the Western Mediterranean.

Accomplishments

The Phoenicians discovered that by crushing certain shells into powder, they could make purple dye which was what only the extremely rich buy. They also created one of the most important alphabets in history. Lastly, they were also famous for their glass and lumber they got from Lebanon.

Lasting Impact

The Phoenicians have an impact on the language, society, and resources we have today. In modern society, we have used these discoveries and cultures as a base to making new and better things.

The Phoenician Alphabet

The Phoenician culture is best known for their alphabet, they spoke a semitic language which they simplified into 22 symbols to write. Although, the Phoenicians were not the only people to make an alphabet, theirs was important because it was passed onto the Greeks which became latin, which we still use today.
