The Phantom Tollbooth

By Norton Juster Glogster by Hallie Yamamura

q

The "Whether" man, not the "Weather" man

Summary Milo is always bored, every activity is a waste of time. He seems to always look at the glass half "empty" instead of half "full." Until one day he arrives home from school to find in his bedroom a peculiar package marked for him to recieve. Inside the package it contains a miniature tollbooth and a map of "the Lands Beyond". Attached to the package is a note addressed "FOR MILO, WHO HAS PLENTY OF TIME". He carefully assembles the tollbooth, takes the map and then drives through the tollbooth in his toy car. MIlo soon finds himself on a road to Expectations. He acts all nonchalant paying zero attention to his route and soon becomes lost in the Doldrums. The Doldrums is a depressing , colorless place where laughing and thinking is prohibited. But then a miricale happens, he is found and rescued by Tock, a "watchdog" with a litteral alarm clock on him. Tock will join Milo on his journey!

When Milo and Tock arrive in prison they meet the "Which," not to be confused with the "Whitch." She is also known as Faintly Macabre. She tells the two the history of Wisdom: Its two rulers, King Azaz and the Mathemagician, they both had adopted girls, Rhyme and Reason. Everyone agreed that with Rhyme and Reason, nothing is impossible. Everyone lived in peace until there was a disagreement. They banished the princesses to the Castle in the Air, and since then, the kingdom has had neither Rhyme or Reason.

THE DISSONANCEDOCTOR

t

Milo goes on an adventure in "the Lands Beyond" for weeks. Then when he is driving back, he see's the tollbooth. A note is attached that says "FOR MILO, WHO KNOWS THE WAY." He also finds out that the tollbooth is called "THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH."He is was very sad to leave the wonderful place but looks and finds that he lives in a lovely and interesting world. Milo learned that there is lots to do in the world that he might not have enough "TIME."

The theme of the book is enjoying life and being flexible because you don't live forever. Milo seemed to always be bored, so when he went to the "Lands Beyond" he learned to appreciate life more and that if something isn't going the way you want it, change it.
