Did You Know... The Old Croton Aqueduct could hold over 180,000,000 gallons of water!Typically it is partly buried.The tunnel was 8 1/2 feet high and 7 1/2 feet wide. Finally, it was built like the Romans: 13 inches lower every mile.

When, Where, and Who Built it The CrotonAqueduct wasstarted to be built in 1837. It took 5 years to complete. It was all the way from NYC to Croton!That's 41miles! Most of the builders were Irish immigrants. It was designed by David Douglass and John B. Jervis.

Why Was It Built? To fight the diseases and fires that hit homes and businesses.
