The Moors

Some of the culture that the Moors left behind was Latin. Latin isn’t the main language of Spain even today but there was a study that showed that a majority of Spanish has Latin roots, or is a different pronunciation of it. They also left behind the rimmed edging on their cathedrals that they had on their mosques first. Also they left behind paved roads, books, street lamps, and their castles.

What evidence can we find in Culture that the Moors left?

The Moors were in Spain for a long time from around 711 to 997, so for at least 286 years. The word Moors derives from the Latin mauri, a name for the indigenous tribes living in the Roman area. They are from North Africa and were part of the Islamic Empire, just a diffrent branch of it. They came from an area near Moracco. It’s still important today because it influenced many of the ways that Spain and the surrounding area is today. They made the first paved roads and the first street lamps, in Europe, making Spain a more advanced culture. Back then at least.

Who were they?

The moors were originally tribes from North Africa, that had already been conquered by the Islamic Empire. When they conquered Spain they took the Islamic religion with them. They had to travel 8.9 miles to get there, but, mostly through the territory of the Islamic Empire so they had nothing to worry about.

How is phisical geography connected to the Moors?

The physical geography of the area hurt the Moors because Spain is only 195,124 square miles, that isn’t too large, but, it’s the 3rd largest country in Europe. Also around 45% of it is covered in the Meseta Plateau. The Meseta Plateau is huge, and is rarely flat. Spain is divided by the Cordillera Central (mountains). Even though the highest peak is Cerro de Punta at 4390 ft, it would still be hard to conquer.

The physical location is important for many reasons historically. One of which is the fact that it’s joining the Islamic Empire with Europe. It’s also important because even though it’s off to the side of the Islamic Empire, it’s still informed the rest of Europe, more or less, about the Islamic Empire. Making, essentially, the crusaders.

How did physical geography slow down the Moors?

The physical location is important today because they influenced the culture of Spain. It’s off to the side and is mostly used for tourists to look at the architecture, and use the beaches. The Canary Islands are part of Spain and they add to the beauty. Around 74% of the money comes from services like teaching people how to surf, building things like hotels, restaurants, ect., and basically anything. Also Spain has the largest Muslim population in all of Europe.

Why is the location that the Moors used to be in important today?

Many things happened that lead to the end of Moorish Spain. One of which is when Alfonso II unites the kingdom of Aragon and the County of Barcelona in 1162.

How did it end?

Why was the location of the Moors important back then?

Many things happened that lead to the end of Moorish Spain. One of which is when Alfonso II unites the kingdom of Aragon and the County of Barcelona in 1162.
