The Monkey's PawBy: W.W. Jacobs

Main Conflict

The plot of “The Monkey’s Paw,” is that the White’s receive a monkey’s paw that grants them three wishes, but their wishes aren’t exactly what they expect it to be. Also, the wishes have a twist to them. When the White’s make their first wish of “Two hundred pounds,” strange things begin to happen. For example, the narrator says that “ A fine crash from the piano greeted the words,” and their son getting "Badly hurt,” at his job.

The point of view in the story is in third person. In the first sentence of the story, the narrator is speaking in third person by telling the reader where the story takes place and saying, “ Father and son were at chess.” Also, the narrator is introducing the characters first.

The theme of the story is to expect the unexpected and that if you mess with fate, then fate will come back to mess with you. For example, in the story, Sergeant Major Morris said, “A very holy man wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow.” This explains why the theme is that you shouldn’t mess with fate.
