The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner

ByJames Dashner

The most important theme of this novel is bravery. Thomas the main character is brave to help is friends try to escape the maze while risking his own life. In this impossible situation, Thomas finds courage to face the evil that haunts them inside the maze.

The story begins when Thomas enters the maze, without any memories of his life before. He finds many other boys in this same situation. He goes through many dangerous adventures, trying to find his way out of the maze. There are many obstacles in Thomas's life inside the maze, but he finds ways to defeat the monsters called the Grievers. Thomas works with the other Gladers to solve the mystery of the maze. Throughout his plan they lose many friends along the way. In the end of this book they discover that they were all part of an experiment to find out who was the strongest and smartest of them all.

"How could these walls move? They’re huge, and they look like they’ve been standing here for thousand years. And the idea of those walls closing and trapping him inside this place they called the Glade was downright terrifying.” (pg 25) Thomas is confused about how the walls move and why they move every night at the exact same time. The walls of the Maze close to prevent the Grievers from coming inside the Glade and killing each Glader. Thomas is brave at one point to go out into the maze at night, even though he knew that he could die.

“ ‘I promised him!’ He screamed, realizing even as he did so that his voice was laced with something wrong. Almost insanity. ‘I promised I’d save him, take him home! I promised him!’.” (pg 358)Thomas is grieving over Chuck’s death by yelling about how he promised to take him home to his family. He feels guilty not living up to his promises. This quote shows how Thomas’s character is important to the book. He is a loyal friend, he is brave and he feels responsible for the other Gladers, especially when Thomas went through the changing and found out that he help create the Maze.

The song When The Darkness Comes relates to the theme of bravery in The Maze Runner because all the characters in the maze are struggling to find their way out and to feel hope in their horrible situation. The main character Thomas is brave to help his friends try to escape the Grievers while risking his own life.

Song Analysis

“He couldn’t leave a friend to die. Even someone as cranky as Alby. He reached down and grabbed both of Alby’s arms, then squatted into a sitting position and wrapped the arms around his neck from behind. He pulled his lifeless body onto his back and pushed with his legs, grunting with the effort.”(pg 120)The narrator is stating that Thomas was running away from a griever trying to save both of their lives. This quote tell me a lot about what kind of person Thomas is in the story. He is caring, brave and loyal. He tries to save as many people as he can. Braveryand friendship are themes throughout the book. It is not surprising that he will risk his own life to save his friends.
