The Mayan Empire

The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, it is well known for having a fully developed written language, as well as for its art, architecture, mathematical and astronomical systems. Mayans are believed to have been established during the Pre-Classic period c. 2000 BC to AD 250, Ideas such as writing, and the calendar did not originate with the Maya; however, the Mayan did fully developed them. Maya influence can be found anywhere from Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and western El Salvador to as far away as central Mexico, that is more than 620 miles from the Maya area. The influence however is thought to ba a result from trade and cultural exchanges rather than violent conquests.

Mayans have a very distinct method for farming. The Maya agriculture engineers converted hilly and sloped areas into arable land using agricultural terraces. The terraces significantly increased the area for cultivation by altering the sloped hillsides into stepped slopes. The “step down” system reduced the speed of the water runoff, reducing erosion and permitting the soil to capture water by allowing it to slowly sink into the soil.

Mayan Culture

The Mayan Empire

Mayans are known for blood sacrifices. Some of the sacrifices used the blood of a human. These sacrifices were used for both religious and medical reasons. You may not know it, but blood sacrifices still occure today, but not with human blood. The blood of animals has long replaced human's.

The mayan people still live today, they have not died out.The Maya people have survived the Classic period collapse. (wich was when the Maya communities started colapsing mysteriously.) They have also survived the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores and the Spanish colonization of the Americas. Today, the Maya and their descendants form sizable populations throughout the Maya area and still keep their distinctive set of traditions, ideas, culture, and beliefs. Millions of people still speak the mayan Laguages to this day.

The Mayan civilization lived between 300 and 900 A.D, but the Mayan people and culture remain to this day. Mayan ruins continue to empress scientists with the complex use of archtechure, language, art, science, and mathemetics in their ruins.
