Eisenhower dedicated the memorial in a ceremony on November 10, 1954, the 179th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps. * 32-foot-high figures are shown raising a 60-foot bronze flagpole from where the cloth flag flies 24 hours a day in order from Presidential proclamation of June 12, 1961.*At night, some people claim to see the illusion of the men raising the flag.*Iwo Jima was an island in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Japan!

On Febuary 19th, 1945, American soldiers made their 1st strike on the Japanese home islands of Iwo Jima. It was a major battle in which the United States Armed Forces fought and captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Empire. The American invasion had the goal of capturing the entire island. It is known to be one of the bloodiest battles during all of World War II.
