The Maasai Rally Agenst The Government

•They are not permitted to farm. •They are not permitted to build permanent structures including houses, thus they must live in traditional mud and dung huts.•They may not drill water wells or bring in plastic water storage tanks.•There are a dozen or so lodges/luxury campsites in the conservation area able to offer only limited employment opportunities to the Maasai.

Fast Facts - ...the Maasai traditionally place themselves at the center of their universe as God's chosen people. Like other African religions, the Maasai believe that one high god (Enkai) created the world, forming three groups of people.

The Rally of the Maasai in the Ngorongoro Crater

The Goverment say it is to protect the wildlife -- which is also a major source of income from hunting and safaris -- from Maasai cattle overgrazing the land.Under the plan, most of the conservation corridor will still be accessible for grazing but no one will be allowed to live there. The other 1500 sq. km. will be a "game controlled area", where hunting is permitted and access controlled.

It is estimated that 1 million Maasai people live in Kenya and Tanzania.

The Tanzanian government is threatening to evict the local Maasai community from the area in a bid to create a 4000 square kilometer "conservation corridor."

The maasia land has a rich variety of resident birds and animals that make the area their home. Its varied habitats support between 30.000-40.000 animals most of the year.
