2NO₂(g) → N₂(g) + 2O₂(g)

2CO(g) + O₂(g)→ 2CO₂(g)

H₄C₂(g) + 3O₂(g) → 2CO₂(g) + 2H₂O(g)

.

Nitrogen oxide (NO₂) is a harmful gas that can cause smog and irritate lungs.

Nitrogen (N) is a gas that makes up 78% of the air humans breathe everyday.

.

Oxygen (O) is a highly reactive gas that is essential in air and water and, therefore, essential for life.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas essential in the production of smog. It is highly toxic and harmful to humans and the earth.

.

Carbon monoxide (CO₂) is the primary greenhouse gas on earth, and is converted by plants into oxygen.

Hydrocarbon (HC) is an organic gas that can cause smog, and is occasionally toxic.

.

Water vapour (H₂O) is a nontoxic gas, yet it is one of the largest contributors to the greenhouse effect.

CATALYSTS

Most of the metals used as catalysts in the honeycomb-shaped converter (a shape used for maximum surface area) are noble metals.

A catalytic converter reaction is used inside vehicles to reduce the harmful by-products of the consumption of fuel by oxidizing the products used (nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and hydrocarbon) into less harmful products for environmental and health reasons. In the USA, there are approximately 1.3 cars per person - and there are currently more than a billion functioning cars in the world. With so many motorvehicles on the road, minimizing the damage being done is a huge concern for the drivers and car companies alike. Without a catalytic converter, the initial harmful products produced with the consumption of gas would never go through the catalyst-covered converter and emerge as relatively safer substances, resulting in a more dangerous and a far dirtier world.
