Thomas Jefferson Commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803 to explore the northwest territory. In 1804, about 40 men led by Meriwether and William moved up the Missouri River.
Accomplishments
The expedition was the first scientific project in the nations history to recieve federal money.Succeeded in documenting more than 100 new animals, 178 plants, as well providing 140 maps of the region.Established friendly relations with some of the Native American tribes.
Goals
They were to study the Native American tribes living in the area as well as plants, animals, geology and the terrain.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition
With Sacagawea's help they cross the Rocky Mountians, and from the Columbia River they reach the Pacific ocean by November 1805.

They return to St. Louis by September 1806 with great fanfare and important imformation.
