What is the Laws of the Twelve Tables?

The Laws of the Twelve Tables was the earliest attempt in Rome to create a law code. The tablets of the Laws of the Twelve Tables, which were written in 450 B.C.E., are oldest surviving tablets of Roman literature. Originally, the Laws of the Twelve Tables was written by the Decemviri Consulari Imperio Legibus Scribundis, the ten Consuls. Those ten original laws were drafted after a year and two more tables of statutes were added.

Importance

The creation of the Laws of the Twelve Tables influenced hugely on Rome both in society and politics that showed a major improvement of Rome. As the Laws of the Twelve Tables was the earliest law code of Rome, it provided actual law for Roman citizen and became basis of other Roman laws that were formed later. It also attempted to solve social distinctions of Rome. During the Classical era, Roman was divided into two classes: plebeians and patricians. Patricians were wealthy who owned land and power in society and plebeians were free people but not wealthy. Social distinctions of Rome created tension between two classes and the Laws of the Twelve Tables helped to protected plebeians from patricians. The Laws of the Twelve Tables also provided several facts of social hierarchy of Rome during the Classical era. As the Laws of the Twelve Tables contained laws for plebeians, it revealed the fact that Rome attempted to solve problems of social distinctions and Roman's political method. The Laws of the Twelve Tables also influenced the world. The breakup of the Roman Empire under the pressure of Germanic invasions brought disruption of Roman legal administration. The codes of Germanic laws eclipsed Roman law in Western Europe, however Roman law codes (the Twelve Tables) influenced Germanic laws.
