The Lace Monitor

Habitat Description

The lace monitor lives in eastern Australia, stretching from Cape Bedford on the Cape York Peninsula, to the south east of South Australia. Lace monitors areterrestrial and arboreal reptiles, which means that theyusually reside in forests, but can be found in open and coastal tablelands, and slopes. The lace monitor 's nest can be found either under sheltered places on the ground, like under rocks or fallen logs, or up in the trees, like inside a hollow tree.

Biotic and Abiotic Factors That Affect Survival

Biotic Factors:Trees, humans, food, predators.Abiotic Factors:Temperature, weather.

Characteristics That Help To Survive With The Factor

HumansBecause of the patterning on their bodies, lace monitors haveexcellent camouflage, and can blend in easily with theirsurroundings, thus making it quite difficult for people to spot them.

TreesLace monitors have long, sharp claws at the ends of their toes, which they use to help them climb.

PredatorsA lace monitor's main predators are dingoes and birds of prey, like the wedge-tailed eagle. When approached by predators, ordisturbed, the lace monitor will run up the nearest tree withgreat speed. The lace monitor's camouflage also helps them toelude their predators.

FoodA lace monitor can and will eat insects, other reptiles, small mammals, birds, and birds' eggs. Lace monitors have forked tongues, so they can easily distinguish where the smell of preyis coming from. Because of their great speed and agility, theycan easily chase after prey, and their thin and streamlined bodymeans that they can fit into small places, like animal burrows, and also make it easier for the lace monitor to run.

Temperature and WeatherLace monitors are largely inactive during colder temperatures andharsher weather. They are are more active during the periodbetween September and May. During their times of inactivity, lace monitors will shelter in tree hollows, under rocks or under fallen trees.
