The Klondike Gold Rush

The Klondike Gold Rush started in 1896 with the discovery of gold. It brought thousands of men to the north for a chance to get rich. Gold was discovered in 1896 by George Carmack , Skookum Jim Mason and Dawson Charlie. The gold was found in Rabbit Creek. Men travelled countless miles over icey mountains and through dense trails to try and find a city called Dawson. Dawson was a rapidly growing city at the time, it was a town that was where most of the gold prospectors stayed and it had the big bucks for gold.

The Klondike Gold Rush affected the Yukon so much, it became a territory on June 13 1898.Today, the Yukon Territory has many industies like logging and mining for gold. There was even a book with the setting of the Klondike Gold Rush called the Call of the Wild. It is about a dog named Buck who get kidnaped and brought to the Yukon Territory to be a sled dog. The Klondiek Gold Rush brought many people to Canada and will go down in History in one of Canada's greatest events.

The trip to the Yukon and to find gold wasn't easy. many men died from mine collapses and falling of icy mountians because of all of the weigh to the supplies through them off balence. Between the years of 1897 and 1899, there was a total of 29 million dollars of gold sold. Men found the gold by a trick called panning. What men would do id take a pan into a river and scoop up a bunch of dirt. then they would search through the dirt and try and find little pieces of gold.
