"The Jungle"

"THE JUNGLE"a novel that paved the way for the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 and the FDA.

The Meat Inspection act of 1906 required "That the examinations of specimens of foods and drugs shall be made in the Bureau of Chemistry of the Department of Agriculture..."

Upton Sinclair's novel was filled with detail of the unhealthy practices of the meat packing industry in Chicago.

The novel was written as socialist propaganda to rally workers against their corrupt employers, instead public outcry caused legislators to put regulations on the meat standards.

The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 required proper labeling on foods and drugs.

The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 was created to ensure meat and meat products were produced in sanitary conditions.
