The Jamestown Settlement

The Virginia Company was in search of economic opportunity. They expected to profit from mineral wealth such as gold and iron ore, timber and wood products and other natural resources. They also hoped to find a Northwest Passage or sailing route to the Orient for trade. The Orient is the countries of Asia. After, they built Roanoke. 17 years later, all of the colonists there disappeared. That's why they decided to build Jamestown.

Accomplishments

John Smith was the leader of Jamestown. John Smith saved Jamestown by making a rule saying "anyone who did not work, did not eat". According to legend, when John Smith was captured by the Powhatan indians, Pocahontas saved his life.

- Started making money when John Rolfe discovered tobacco.- John Smith saved Jamestown from being another Roanoke. - Became the first permanent English settlement in North America.

Lasting Impact

If it weren't for Jamestown, America wouldn't be here today. Jamestown is America's birthplace.
