The History of Rap Music

November 1st, 1970Coke La Rock, an old-school rapper, first created poems which contained similar rhythms to rap music. They soon became very popular and were labelled the "first raps".


Rap music, also referred to as Hip Hop music, initially came about in the early 1970s, in New York, The Bronx. It is a music genre consisting of steady paced music that often includes rapping in an almost chanting style. However, rap/hip hop music doesn't always need to include rapping. It became known as part of the urban culture and was acknowledged by 4 characteristics: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Beatboxing was also eventually incorporated into the genre.

April 16th, 1981The first rap music video is created by famous band, Whodini for their single 'Magic's Wand'.

April 14th, 1990Rap Music begins to evolve into a sub-genrre of gangsta rap with the help of infamous rappers such as Schoolly D, Ice T, Easy E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and Snoop Dogg. It highlighted the lifestyles they led growing up in their neighbourhoods, as well as violence, drugs, sex and gangs.

September 13th, 1994Notorious B.I.G. releases 'Ready To Die' which becomes one of the most popular album in the Rap Music industry.

March 6th, 1997Due to the explicit content of rap music, such as violence, many murders of famous rapper took place, such as Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. This then kickstarted a new outlook for rappers, where they decided not to glorify violence and gangs.

November 8th, 2000Rap music features in films for the first time, through Eminem's appearance in the film '8 Mile' which also featured one of his songs 'Lose Yourself'. This rap song helped win the film an Oscar.


November 16th, 2004One of Eminem's most popular albums, 'Encore', is released before its scheduled time because it was leaked online beforehand. That being said, it still went 4 times Platinum.

April 16th, 2014More rap artists are introduced to the genre of rap Music, such as: ASAP Rocky, Kedrick Lamar, Kid Cudi, Childish Gambino and many more. However, some have used their musical popularity in order to stem into other forms of media. For example, Childish Gambino is also an actor on the hit TV show, 'Community'.
