Time Line

1880's

All-male cheer teams began. Princeton formed all-male pep club. Tom Peeble brought cheer to the University of Minnesota.

Did You Know......Cheer currently exist in 79 countries and there are more than 4.5 million cheerleaders worldwide?...The Indianapolis Colts were the first team to host a professional cheer squad, however the sport did not gain recognition until the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders were introduced in the 1972-1973 season?...Today 97% of cheerleaders are women, however 50% of college squad members are men?

First official cheer was performed at the University of Minnesota by Johnny Campbell, a med student who picked uo a megaphone and yelled:"Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-u-mah! Hoo-rah! Hoo-rah! Varsity! Varsity! Minn-e-so-ta!

Women joined cheer teams.

Men leave to fight in WWII, so women join team in large numbers.

Lawrence "Herkie" Herkimer held the first summer clinic at Sam Houston State University.

"Herkie" incorporated NCA(National Cheerleaders Association).

Cheer could be found in every high school and grade school across the country, and pee wee and youth leagues developed as well.

1974

Title IX passed which allowed women into competitive sports.

Jeff Webb (who had been general manager of NCA) founded the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) that taught higher level skills.

Liberty Stunt Created.

1990's

1980s

1987

Basket toss was created by UCA.

UCA became the first association that was devoted to teaching safety to coaches and advisors.

Allstar cheerleading (aka competitive cheer) commenced.

2004

Today

Allstar cheer grew rapidly throughout the 90's.ESPN declared cheerleading a sport.

USASF(U.S All Star Federation) organized the first Worlds(competition).

UCA has grown into Varsity Spirit Corporation, encompassing 17 cheer events, apparel, and service companies.Innovative stretches, stunts, tumbling, and choreography continue to be invented.

Did You Know......Presidents, Dwight Eisenhower, FDR, and Ronald Reagan, were cheerleaders in their college days?...Lawrence Herkimer invented the "Herkie" jump, the spirit stick and pom-poms?... Cheerleading began to circulate to Europe and Asia when the British Cheerleading Association*(BCA) formed in the 1980's?
