The five Great Lakes are among the most important natural resources in the world. Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario, together with the St. Lawrence River, form the worlds largest freshwater ecosystem. The Great Lakes were formed by huge glaciers approximately 14 000 years ago the Great Lakes are in a state of constant change. They continue to be affected by nature through erosion, movement in the Earths crust, and climate change A more detrimental change is caused by the human use of lakes. Toxic substances in the lakes have reached problematic levels, endangering the countless species of animals and plants that make their home in their huge ecosystem.

Ice cover on North America’s Great Lakes reached 88 % in February 2014!These levels have not been observed since 1994!
