Examples of Self Reliance: Luvenia: -Luvenia had to be self reliant after she got fired from being the Deet's housekeeper. She had to start her life anew without any help. -When she had to leave the Deets' house she had to find a new apartment and job. Her aunt helped her throw a penny party to raise money for the apartment. -She decided to persue the career of a hair stylist.

Examples of Perseverance:Tommy: -Tommy had perseverance when he tried hard in school and in basketball. -He also had the drive to do his besst and keep the scholarship which he was offered. -Tommy wanted to live up to the Lewis family name. He had perseverance while he made a statement about his ancestor, Muhammad, and the struggles of his famil'sy history. The obstacle in his way was the town sheriff.

Examples of Courage : Lizzy: - She showed courage when she tried to bring some water to Lem - When Lizzy made the decision to run away with Lem and Josh, she demonstrated courage and strength.

Examples of Pride:Elijah & Abby: -Elijah wanted to help find money to pay the tax on Glory Field. -When a neighbor's child, David, went missing, a bounty was posted for whoever found David. The boys, trying to get the money for the plantation, decided to take this task upon themselves. -This boys and their family had much pride over this plantation, so they did not want to lose it.-Elijah and Abby also had pride after they achieved the task of finding David.
