Characterization
Notice and Note
The color red, the first color Jonas sees, can symbolize love and passion which is what led Jonas into releasing the memories. Pale eyes can symbolize the bond between the recievers throughout time. The newchild, Gabriel, can be a message and a symbol for hope in a brighter future. The sled can symbolize breaking free and giving freedom.. The river can symbolize change. People often say you can't step in the same river twice because it flows and changes and never has the same water as before.
The character Jonas is round and dynamic; we can tell alot about him and he changed throught the story. The character the Giver is round and static; we can tell alot about him and he didn't change much in the story. The character Asher is flat and static; we can't tell much about him and he didn't change other than his assignment.
Lois Lowry provided us with some tough questions that Jonas asked himself. An example would be when Jonas asks himself what would happen to his friendships. Based on this question, I believed his friendships would become weaker and his friends would become angry toward him because he couldn't tell them about his training.

Theme
They are multiple themes to the book The Giver. The theme of The Giver could be to trust what you believe and make a difference. Jonas thought that not knowing the past was wrong and made a difference by bringing them back. Another theme could be to hold onto the past and learn from it.
