The GiverBy:Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry's book, The Giver is a good book that teaches people that sameness is never good. You always want to have a little difference in your life or you wont be happy. Just like Jonas, Jonas was not happy with his life in the community after he found out what the adults lied about. So he asked the Giver to help him leave the community. It was forbidden for a Receiver to apply for release, so he didn't. A few days before he was going to leave, he foud out that they were going to "Release" Gabriel. And he loved Gabriel, so he decided to leave early to save Gabriel's life. When they said that someone will be released, they taught the children that they would go Elsewhere. And Elsewhere only meant that they would be killed by lethal injection.
Summary
Theme
The theme of The Giver is sameness. Every thing is the same in his community. There are no differences in the dwellings. Every ones dwelling had the same furniture, and layout. They have no climate change, mountains, or even hills. And they do not celebrate any of the holidays that we do today. They all have their own routine and do not ever change it, unless there is a ceremony.
Characters
The main character in The Giver is Jonas. He is the boy in his family unit. Each Family unit has 1 boy, 1 girl, and a mother and father. His sister is named Lily, and in the book they do not say what his parents names were. His best friends names were Asher and Fiona. And the other two main characters was the Giver and Gabriel. The Giver was an older man who transmitted memories of the past to Jonas. And Gabriel was an important baby in the story.
The setting is in a community that is very formal, and everyone speaks a certain way. It seems like there was a disaster and they are trying to create a new civilization.
