The Gettysburg Battle

New Union General George Meade went up against Robert Lee. The Union set up on Cemetery Ridge(shaped like a hook) and the Conferderates set up on Seminary Ridge. Lee got the upper hand for his high ground. After day 1 of fighting the confederates won.

The Battle of Gettysburg was on July 1-3. Confederate General Robert E. Lee, went north to get supplies(weapons not boots). Lee wanted to threaten Northern cities and to take fighting away from Virginia. On Lee's way to get supplies, the two armies met each on accident.

Day 2 begins and it is harsh. The most bitter fighting taking place was in Devils Den, Little Round Top, Peach Orchard, Cemetery Hill, and the wheat fields. Then Day 2 is a stale mate.

Meade wanted to wait for Lee to attack him. James Lonstreet, Lee's right hand man, urged Lee go back towards Washington D.C. But Lee wanted to win the war, which he thought he had an invincible army. He didn't have an invicible army because the Union won the Battle of Gettysburg. They say that July 4, 1863 was the second most important Independence Day.

Picketts ChargeThe plan for Picketts Charge was to go straight up the hill and attack. As the confederates were coming at them the Union stopped shooting cannons decieving them to think their cannons were jammed. But once the confederates got closer the Union shot at them and killed everyone in the charge.

After the Battle of Gettysburg Robert E. Lee never attacked again.
