The Flipped Classroom

- Not all students have access to technology outside of the school.- It puts a big emphasis on personal responsibility.- It increases computer time, in an age when students are already glued to their electronic devices all day long.- Increased preparation time for teachers to produce good quality videos and materials.- It may require increase funding for schools to properly train teachers and to supply the technology required to flip a classroom.

- It's a learner-centered model, as opposed to the teacher-oriented approach of traditional learning. - Teachers have more time to assist individual students and to find practical ways for the students to apply the material learned to real life problems.- Less class time is wasted lecturing - more time is used to explore topics more in depth, for peer colloaboration, and to learn by doing. - It allows the teacher to provide more highly differentiated instruction.- More class time can be spend on higher-order thinking skills and solving difficult problems with the help of the teacher and peers.- It increases in-class activities. Students are actively involved in their learning thrughout the whole lesson.- It allows for students to work at the their own pace and review the lessons as many times as they need to.

The Flipped Classroom

Is an approach to learning that completely inverts traditional methods of teaching. Instead of listening to lectures in class, then completing assignments at home, students in a flipped classroom do the opposite. They watch and access material online, at home or in their free time, then the time spent in class is used to go over the exercises, or what would be considered homework in a traditional classroom.

With the use of a computer, smartphone, or tablet, students access video recordings from lessons, online tutorials, readings, or any other material assigned by the teacher. This part of the learning is done outside of the classroom. Class-time is then used to explore the practical uses of the concepts, to work on exercises and assignments with the support of the teacher. The teacher has the opportunity to work one-on-one with the students, to facilitate discussion and to encourage group collaboration.
