The Fault in our Stars

Setting- Time and PlaceEX: The Fault in our Stars setting is in Indianapolis between 2008-2012.

Flashback- A scene that inturrpts the present to tell what happened at an earlier time.EX: Hazel tells Augustus her cancer story thrugh flashbacks.

Foreshdowing- the use of clues that hint at important plot developments follow the story.EX: While Hazel and Augustus are on an airplane they watch the same movie, but Augustus' starts first. This shows that just like he knew what was going to happen first in the movie they were watching, he knew that he had cancer before Hazel did.

Irony- When the outcome is opposite of what is expected.EX: Augustus' death is ironic in the book because throughout the book Hazel worries about her death and the people she will leave behind, when in reality Augustus' death arrives first.

Characters:-Protagonist- The main character.-Antagonist- The opposing character.EX: In the novel the protagonist is Hazel Grace Lancaster and the antagonist is cancer.

Conflict-Struggle between opposing forces.EX: Hazel struggles to figure out how to live her life as normally as possible while battling cancer.

Similie- Comparison using like or as.EX: "I fear oblivion, I fear it like the proverbial blind man who's afraid of the dark."

Metaphor-Comparison not using like or asEX: "My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations."

Personification-Techniques of assigning human qualities to non-human objects.EX: "Here it was that great and terrible ten, slamming me again and again."

Symbolism-Practice of using an object to represent itself, as well as representing something broader than itself.EX: In The Fault in our Stars, the old swing set symbolizes the childhood Hazel lost to cancer.
